Texting

Since Jackie told you all about our camping trip I thought I would talk about something that has become a sore spot in our household, TEXTING!! It has become a dirty word in our house and since I am YW President, it is very annoying at church also.

I totally understand that texting has a purpose in the world but I think it is becoming a HUGE problem. It is very addicting just like drugs, alcohol, and dare I say pornography. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to look at their New Era's and read what is being said about texting.

My girls want unlimited texting so that their friends will talk to them!! Does anyone else find that amazing? Their friends won't talk to them?!!!?????? Because they don't text :( They don't text because they have to pay for each and every one of them which is 20 cents per text which adds up fast. I want them to be smart with their money so I want them to learn a lesson and I also think that there is more to life than staring at a cell phone. Well the lesson was learned the hard way for one daughter who had her texting turned off and the other daughter who thinks life is unfair is just being smart and learning to control herself. Do I think this is bad? NO! I think more parents need to teach their children that there is a time and a place for texting and it isn't at church or when someone is sitting next to them talking to them.

Texting is soooo huge that it is the only thing we talk about as a group with the YW. Ok not the only thing but it comes up too much. The girls like to compare to see who sends more texts!! One girl did 9000 texts another 10,000 texts a month. That is one text every 5 minutes in a 24 hour period. Anyone else out there think this is a problem? :(

It is a HUGE problem. I was talking to a mother the other day that said her college student (who had never texted before) had a $1,000 yes ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR texting bill! HOLY SMOKES! Neither of my children at home have a cell phone anymore. Period. They cause more trouble than they are worth. When I took Chancy's away, I got my son back. If anyone wants to talk to them they can use the old-fashioned method and use the house phone. Very few have done that, Thank goodness! Now with the cancer issue, that just adds another reason not to let them keep that thing glued to their heads.

Right on you guys. I like a cell phone when I'm away from the house in case of emergencies. I think it is terrible to drive down the highway or street and seeing cell phones up to the ears of drivers. I appreciate those drivers that pull off to the side of the road. I think there is a place for cell phones but the majority of people are miss using them.

We just got texting on our phones. I wasn't necessarily wanting it, but we got it anyway. Personally, I don't understand what is so great about it. Maybe it's becasue I'm old, but I would rather actually talk to someone. Plus it takes me forever. BTW, I have a blog now as well. There is a link off of just about everyone elses page.

Text messaging is so annoying. It has its benefits, but I can't help but think the coming generations will be mute! Social and academic english skills, what's left of them, are being flushed down the techno-toilet. At least someone will be good at those acronymns on Jeopardy.

you know the people that text all the time when they speak in text! it's hilarious! I didn't actuall think anyone did that till I heard a girl at the aquarium say idk, and lol, and a bunch of other text lingo in answering her sisters question! I thought she was just messing around till her sister turned around and said "When will you stop talking in text?! Talk like a normal person!" it kind of suprised me!

oh and another thing! I was texting one of my guy friends and I asked him what he was doing... he told me he was on a date!!!! I was totally shocked and told him flat out that that was kind of rude! then he told me "I only text you back when she's on her phone!" WHAT?!?!?! so I told him good bye and not to text me till his date was over. He did as soon as he dropped her off and I grilled him some more on texting while he's on a date... the funny thing is that now whenever I'm around and he's talking to me he turns his phone on silent. kind of sad that I had to tell him he was being rude. he didn't think anything was wrong with what was happening on his date! I'm happy that I have texting blocked on my phone now.

Amen, sister. We were lucky enough not to have coverage at camp, or I'm sure we would have had this problem. A friend of mine who is the YW pres in her ward has a cute basket that she holds at the door of YW and the girls have to put their phones in there during lessons or activities and they get them back at the end. If they don't turn them over and they are caught with them, the phone is confiscated and given to the parents. I say now that my kids won't get a phone, but you never know what the future will hold...

I can't believe the way texting has taken over the world of communication. There are times when a quick text or picture message is great--from family when I'm far away--but mostly I think it's pretty annoying to have an entire conversation in text.

I know someone who didn't have texting and used 40,000 texts in one month. She was grounded for life.
